(There will be many more things to come with these pages to help the cc's in their efforts to put their county pages up) HELP!!!Help is here for the newbies, or even those that are having a problem with their pages, listed below are those that can and will help. I've included what each works in, and what areas they are more readily able to help in. I've put it in here in their own words, rather than just list what they work in. Gives a little better idea of who to get in touch with. Lee C Zion I use MS IE 7 on a Win XP PC. To compose my pages I use Dreamweaver and Note Tab Pro. I use WS_FTP Pro to upload pages. For graphics I use Paint Shop Pro. For maps, I use TurboCAD. I was COGenWeb Archives file manager for four years and have extensive experience converting various document formats to text and HTML for the Web. I have been designing HTML pages for ten years so I still remember what people new to HTML are going through. Since I'm now "officially" retired, I have time to help others. Leroy Oldham I use Netscape 3.0 Gold to cruise the web,I use Netscape Communicator 4.03 only as the default browser for my Aardvark and EHTML98 Editors. No help for MSIE....hate it! I am very intrested in Sun Micro's Java and Netscapes Javascript but not really proficient in either. I primarily use CUTE FTP, I use Paintshop 5.0 for graphics. I have a Macintosh and this PC (Aha...help for the Mac users) Well, guess you can list me as a jack of all trades, master of none and will be glad to help any one as much as I can. Scott Scheibe I code with HomeSite (an HTML editor) and am reasonably proficient at it. I am using Topstyle Lite to create style sheets (CSS) I can help trouble shoot your code problems or how to set up a CSS style sheet for your site. I use Cute FTP Pro to upload files. I am good with META tags, proper page naming, I.E: your primary page Should be "index.html", although it is best not to change established page names as you break any links that have been made to it by merely making as simple a change from .htm to .html or index.html to Index.html. If you don't know what a Title tag or META tag is and how they help your pages be found I can tell you about them and why they are important. Need to find HTML resources? Tutorials? I can point you to several good ones. http://scottsworld.info/links.htm#HTMLWEB Betty Baker I'm a retired Web application/JavaScript/Asp/ database etc programmer. Let me know if you need any help on anything. Here you'll find a wealth of tips and links teaching HTML, offering web graphics and backgrounds, FTP programs and loads of other aids. HTML EditorsHere are some HTML editors you can download. I prefer HomeSite for code editing
CSS Style Sheet EditorsHere are some CSS editors you can download. I use Topstyle Lite, it is a free.
You can download the sample style sheets by right clicking and save as, if you click on them you can see the code
From: hollyft@bright.net (Holly Timm) To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com I posted this a couple of days ago to the NYGenWeb mail list and thought maybe others here might find it useful. Feel free to share it elsewhere. One of the time consuming things with a county web site is coding large data listings. Those of you who have used the automatic conversions from Excel will have seen the huge amount of excess code that is added and the ability to make changes and have it look a bit different can become a lengthy and tedious chore. I had a huge data project to do... 53,000+ names for Cuyahoga County Ohio Naturalizations and while beating my brains out on it discovered a way to add code to the excel spreadsheet and make short work of the task and yet avoid the huge bloated coding of a conversion: http://htmlhelp.rootsweb.com/tutorials/genpages/excel.html (This works for those who work directly with coding... not for WYSIWYG programs like FrontPage) Holly Tutorials on FTP and HTML
File Transfer Protocal - FTPFTP is used to transfer your files (also known as pages or web site) to a server, whether your server is Rootsweb, GeoCities or your internet service provider (ISP). "Tucows" has a large selection of FTP software, all of which are available for brief trial periods, some that are freeware and some that are shareware. Although COGenWeb does not promote any one brand over the other, we do advise that you choose one that accomodates your needs and is the easiest for you to use. Servers such as AOL, GeoCities and Tripod offer their own FTP with no purchase necessary. Some commercial web page programs include a built-in FTP program. Also, some browsers provide FTP for transferring and editing files (Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator versions 4.0 and above specifically). Recent versions of Windows has included the ability to access remote files via Windows Explorer "Network Places". Explorer treats the files on the remote server just as it does files on your local disk drives. To open your account directory start Windows Explorer, and enter the remote server address information in the Windows Explorer "Address:" field. Rootsweb accounts would use: ftp://cocounty:password@users.rootsweb.com/public_html/ where "cocounty" is your RootsWeb user name and "password" is your RootsWeb password. (Note: This is the same address format you would use to access via browers.) Space for Web Pages
Query Page OptionsThe query page is the means through which researchers connect with each other. The elements of a good query are:
There are several ways to set up your queries. Rootsweb/Ancestry Message Boards Message boards allow visitors to view queries as well as responses to queries by other visitors. Responses can also be sent automatically to the original submitter via e-mail without involving the Coordinator. E-mail This is the simplest way to receive queries, but for busy counties it is the most time consuming for the CC to post to their site. Visitors to your query page are forced to read every query in order to locate surnames and other researchers. This can be a good thing for your site, but some visitors pay for internet service by the hour and they need to spend the time in a quick and productive search. To help them with this you should place the surnames in all caps at the beginning of each query. County Coordinators Helper program CCHelper helps organize your data by researcher, by surnames and by postings. It also generates web pages for you. The program can be downloaded at the site given above. Useful links, whether you are a new coordinator, or one that has been in the COGenWeb Project for a while. I will try to post these as I come across them! Anyone that has any links they think would be useful, tell me, and I'll put them in here too. (Better than trying to save a bookmark, or e-mail, you know)
